The forecast targeted a region still recovering from two nor’easters this month that cut power to millions of homes and businesses.
A winter storm that’s pelting the Appalachians Monday was poised to re-intensify and blast parts of snow-weary New England with a “weather bomb” of blizzard conditions and up to two feet of snow.
The forecast targeted a region still recovering from two nor’easters earlier this month that cut power to millions of homes and businesses. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for northern Connecticut, Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts from late Monday night until Tuesday night.
“Heavy snow expected with near blizzard conditions,” the weather service warned. “Total snow accumulations of 12 to 17 inches, with localized amounts up to 22 inches, are expected.”
Parts of upstate New York are also likely to get heavy snow by mid-week.
The storm is expected to rapidly strengthen Monday night into Tuesday, potentially undergoing “bombogenesis,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.
Bombogenesis is caused when plunging barometric pressure deeply intensifies a storm, AccuWeather said. The storm can then be called a “weather bomb” or “bomb cyclone.”

“Eastern New England is bracing for the worst of the storm,” Pydynowski said. “However, disruptive snow will first streak across the southern Appalachians and southern mid-Atlantic.”
Travel in eastern Massachusetts will be “very difficult to impossible, especially during the Tuesday morning and potentially the Tuesday evening commute,” the weather service warned. Strong wind gusts were likely to damage trees and power lines, and blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility at times, the weather service said.
Hundreds of homes and businesses remained without power Monday from the last storm. That round of wet, heavy snow and high winds bashed much of the region last Wednesday and Thursday — including bouts of lightning and thunder known as “thundersnow” — knocking down trees and toppling power lines.
That storm hit while thousands of residents remained in the dark from the “bomb cyclone” that blew through the region two weeks ago.
On Monday, parts of Kentucky and West Virginia were enveloped under a foot of snow. Winter storm warnings were in effect for parts of Virginia and West Virginia, where heavy snow already was reported Monday.
The highest snow total from the storm so far was 15 inches in Craigsville, W. Va., the weather service reported.
The storm will stretch into parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York state and most of New England.
Roofs, especially flat ones, that have not been cleared of the excessive snowfall from the last nor’easter may fail during this heavy snow event,” Pydynowski said.
