The pass rusher has not played in an NFL game since his suspension in 2015.
The Oakland Raiders announced Monday that they have released linebacker Aldon Smith less than 24 hours after San Francisco police said they sought to question him about a domestic violence incident.
Smith, 28, had been on the Raiders’ reserve/suspended list and was set to become a free agent at the beginning of the new league year later this month. He has not played in an NFL game since 2015 and has yet to be reinstated.
The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement Sunday night that it was seeking to question Smith about a domestic violence incident that allegedly took place at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Smith “fled the scene” after a “victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the statement.
SFPD did not immediately reply to an email from USA TODAY Sports on Monday seeking updated information.
Smith, a former top-10 draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers, was also a subject of an investigation into alleged domestic violence incident last year. He has been suspended by the NFL for repeated violations of the league’s substance abuse policy, including two DUIs while he was with the 49ers.
Smith has also previously been arrested for making a false bomb threat, in 2014, and for possessing illegal assault weapons in 2013.
