Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship smartphones have been out and about for a few weeks and some users have already discovered some issues. Reportedly, some units have touchscreen problems with users reporting dead spots on the display which fails to register fingerprint inputs. Samsung has responded to the complaints and is looking into the matter, believing that the reports are limited in number.
“At Samsung, customer satisfaction is core to our business and we aim to deliver the best possible experience. We are looking into a limited number of reports of Galaxy S9/S9+ touchscreen responsiveness issues. We are working with affected customers and investigating. We encourage any customer with questions to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG,” Samsung’s statement reads.
The touchscreen issue has been reported by users on platforms like Reddit, XDA and Samsung’s own forum as well. As per some of the complaints, the issue ranges from random failed touchscreen inputs to complete dead spots on the display. Some say they were able to resolve the issue after a factory reset, while others found turning up the touch sensitivity solved the problem. Others have returned their affected phones to Samsung in exchange for a new unit. Some users have even posted videos (https://streamable.com/ncyse) online to show what they are dealing with.
We will have to wait a while before it can be confirmed whether this is a software or hardware issue. It is also unclear whether this is a widespread issue or whether it is something affecting only a limited number of people, as Samsung claims. Display issues have plagued phones like the Pixel XL 2 and iPhone X in the past well, but hopefully the touchscreen problem on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ isn’t as widespread as that. We didn’t face any display issues on our Galaxy S9+ review unit.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are incremental updates to last year’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Not much has changed in terms of their outward appearance apart from placing the fingerprint sensor below the rear camera module. Both the phones feature edge-to-edge Infinity displays with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. Samsung’s latest flagships boast of under-the-hood-improvements such as the rear cameras getting Dual Aperture and super slow motion recording at 960fps, Intelligent Scan and AR Emoji among others. We reviewed the Galaxy S9+ and were impressed by its gorgeous display and top-notch performance, making it one of the best high-end flagship smartphone in the market right now.
