President Trump slammed the news media in a series of tweets that bragged about his potential meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.
“In the first hours after hearing that North Korea’s leader wanted to meet with me to talk denuclearization and that missile launches will end, the press was startled & amazed,” he tweeted at 3:02 pm Saturday . “They couldn’t believe it. But by the following morning the news became FAKE. They said so what, who cares!”
Earlier, Trump crowed about China and Japan cheering the planned talks between the US and North Korea.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is “very enthusiastic about talks with North Korea,” Trump tweeted at 12:23 p.m. Saturday.
Trump also wrote that China’s top leader is pleased with the prospect of talks.
“Chinese President XI XINPING and I spoke at length about the meeting with KIM JONG UN of North Korea,” Trump posted at 10:22 am, misspelling his counterpart’s name. Trump fixed the error at 11:15 a.m, correctly spelling Jinping.
“President XI told me he appreciates that the U. S. is working to solve the problem diplomatically rather than going with the ominous alternative. China continues to be helpful!” Trump added.
Trump and Xi spoke by phone on Friday, the White House said.
Trump’s bombshell announcement that he had accepted Kim Jong-un’s offer of a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders is “a step in the right direction,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
China has helped tighten sanctions against North Korea. Trump says the sanctions are a “maximum pressure” campaign designed to force Pyongyang to give up its nuclear program.
Trump pointed to the lack of recent missile tests in an afternoon tweet that highlighted his faith that Kim is serious about the negotiations.
“North Korea has not conducted a Missile Test since November 28,2017 and has promised not to do so through our meetings,” he posted at 1:38 pm. “I believe they will honor that commitment!”
