It’s nearly the weekend, but President Trump isn’t taking it easy just yet.
The Commander in Chief fired off a scathing tweet early Friday morning about Alec Baldwin, who impersonates him on Saturday Night Live.
“Alec Baldwin, whose dying mediocre career was saved by his terrible impersonation of me on SNL, now says playing me was agony,” Trump tweeted. “Alec, it was agony for those who were forced to watch. Bring back Darrell Hammond, funnier and a far greater talent!”
This is a revision of a tweet the president shared earlier and has since deleted. In his first post, Trump mistakenly referred to Baldwin as “Alex” and misspelled dying as “dieing.” Naturally, “Alex Baldwin” became a trending topic on Twitter Friday morning.
What prompted the president’s post? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter which published Thursday, the new talk show host talked about how grueling taking on Trump’s persona is.
“Every time I do it now, it’s like agony. Agony. I can’t,” Baldwin said. “I could go out on the street, stand on any corner and tap 10 people on the shoulder. And all 10 of them, in all likelihood, would be more qualified — ethically, morally, intellectually and spiritually — than Trump.”
“We have to get rid of him. And that’s another project I’m working on,” he said, later adding, “And then if, God forbid, he wins again in 2020, I’m wondering, ‘Can I host a game show in Spain?’ “
Baldwin responded to the president’s tweet Friday morning, seemingly confirming he won’t be hanging up his overly long red tie anytime soon.
“Agony though it may be, I’d like to hang in there for the impeachment hearings, the resignation speech, the farewell helicopter ride to Mara-A-Lago,” Baldwin wrote. “You know. The Good Stuff. That we’ve all been waiting for.”
Baldwin continued to rib Trump in follow-up tweets writing, “Mr. President… please ask your wife to stop calling me for SNL tickets. (Hey, Melania … we’ve got Charles Barkley this Saturday!)”
“Signing off for now,” Baldwin added. “On my way to shoot MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN and grateful to be working w Edward Norton, Cherry Jones, Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis, Bobby (Cannavale), Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael K. Williams. If this is mediocrity, give me more.”
Baldwin isn’t the only celebrity Trump has been doling Twitter blows to recently. He criticized Oprah Winfrey on the social media site on Feb. 18, following an episode of 60 Minutes.
“Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes,” Trump tweeted at the time. “The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”
