After testing the update in previous weeks, the Android Oreo MIUI Global Beta ROM has been released for the Xiaomi Mi 5. The update also includes the security patch from February.
Xiaomi has been busy with Android Oreo updates in the last couple of weeks. We first learned last week that they have been testing Android Oreo for the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Xiaomi Mi Mix. Then earlier this week they rolled out the stable Android Oreo MIUI ROM for the Xiaomi Mi 6. Now, the company is bringing the Android Oreo update to the Xiaomi Mi 5.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 was the company’s flagship phone for 2016, but they haven’t forgotten about it. The specifications are still decent today. It has a 5.15-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 16MP camera, Snapdragon 820 processor, 3/4GB of RAM, 32/64/128GB of storage, and 3,000 mAh battery. It shipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow but has since been updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. It shouldn’t be impressive for a phone to get two major Android version updates, but that’s the reality we live in.
This update is based on Android 8.0 Oreo and it comes with the MIUI 9 Global Beta update. The update also includes the February security patch. Since this is a beta release that may have leaked early, it’s possible that you won’t be able to install it the normal away. You’ll likely need to unlock your bootloader, flash TWRP, and then install the update that way.
Regardless, you can grab the ZIP file from the mirror link below. Keep in mind that this is the beta update, and the stable ROM is still a couple months away. If you don’t wish to manually flash the ROM, the update will eventually roll out via OTA in a couple of weeks.
Here is the brief changelog from the update:
