A Texas Southern University student will earn scholarship money from Beyonce’s headline-grabbing show at the Coachella music festival earlier this month.
The renowned singer, whose April 14 show nodded to historically black universities and homecoming weekends, donated $100,000 after the show to four such universities. On Monday, Google’s charity arm matched that donation, resulting in $25,000 to TSU.
The scholarship’s recipient must put the money to his or her studies in the 2018-19 academic year. TSU will pick finalists and a winner, who will be announced this summer.
Beyonce, a Houston native, included former Prairie View A&M University band members in her performance at Coachella, KTRK reported .
“We challenge other businesses across the country to join us in this commitment to higher education and investment in the future,” said Ivy McGregor, who directs philanthropy and corporate relations at Parkwood Entertainment, which houses Beyonce’s philanthropy initiative BeyGOOD, in a statement.
