A 27-year-old man suspected of driving a vehicle that killed an 8-year-old boy in a hit-and-run crash in Southwest Detroit earlier in the week was arrested Sunday during a traffic stop in Ecorse, police say.
Police received a call at 5 p.m. Thursday that the boy was struck in the area of Miami and Fort Street.
Witnesses said the boy was crossing the street when a dark blue Chevy Tahoe driven by a male ran a red light.
Homicide Captain Michael McGinnis said the boy’s parents were searching for him after he left his home two blocks away from the accident.
Police believe he was heading to a nearby park with his wagon when he was struck.
“(A) very tragic scene,” said McGinnis. “The impact was fatal and we are searching for the vehicle, which should have accident damage to one of the headlights.”
The suspect was arrested Sunday in a traffic stop in Ecorse, police said, in the area where Southfield Road becomest West Jefferson.
Ecorse police could not immediately be reached, but Detroit police say they’re still searching for the vehicle allegedly used in the crash, the dark blue Tahoe.
