The officer did not return fire, said Lt. Pat Merrill with Grand Rapids police.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly approached a Grand Rapids police officer and fired a BB gun at him, according to Grand Rapids police.
The subject is expected to be arraigned within the next few days, said Lt. Pat Merrill with the Grand Rapids Police department. His name is being withheld until he is arraigned.
At around 7 a.m., a man wielding a BB approached a Grand Rapids police officer sitting in a parked cruiser at Joe Taylor Park, 1038 Bemis St. SE, and pointed the weapon at the officer, Merrill said.
The officer immediately moved the vehicle to put distance between himself and the subject and ordered the man to lower his weapon, Merrill said. The man fired his weapon and reportedly yelled “kill me, kill me,” Merrill added.
The officer did not return fire, Merrill said.
As more police arrived, the man fled on a moped and crashed the vehicle into a car at the intersection of Wealthy Street and Fuller Avenue, which is less than a half mile away from Joe Taylor Park, Merrill said.
The suspect was taken to the hospital and is being treated for injuries. The driver of the car was not injured.
