“From This Moment On” singer Shania Twain should think twice about talking politics.
At least when it comes to Donald Trump.
Yes, of course, the record-shattering 52-year-old from Ontario, Canada, is entitled to her speak her mind — and conservative views — about whatever she wants.
Including the President, as she did in an intervie w with the Guardian.
Twain told the UK publication that she “would have voted for (Trump) because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest.”
Twain can offer support for Trump. She can even churn it into a song. Maybe something like, “From This Moment Don.”
Celebs face a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t situation with airing their political opinions, such as Taylor Swift. She’s been criticized for not revealing who she voted for in 2016.
Still, Twain’s remarks, for which she has since flip-flopped and apologized, chafe.
First of all, the “what if” scenario is just empty words.
The Canadian-born singer could not have voted for Trump — or Hillary Clinton, or any candidate for that matter.
Frankly, I’m more interested in who Mark Twain would have voted for in 2016.
But the great American author of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” — who’s been dead for 108 years — currently has the same odds of casting a ballot in a U. S. election as the pop singer.
Why come out stumping for Trump now?
It doesn’t appear that Twain campaigned for Trump before the election.
The commentary simply amounts to blowing well-timed attention-getting smoke ahead of her first album tour since 2002.
The other striking part of Twain’s logic concerns Trump’s seeming “honest.”
Now divorced from producer Mutt Lange and remarried, Twain has gone on record about being in “denial” about her first husband’s affair with her close friend.
Yet she publicly endorses Trump, whose relationships with women don’t give off a hint of “honesty.”
He’s accused of cheating on all three of his wives.
A decade before Trump became the Republican nominee for president, he was caught on tape sharing candid and lewd views on women that were caught on tape.
“I’m automatically attracted to beautiful women — I just start kissing them, it’s like a magnet. Just kiss,” he said in the 2005 conversation.
“I don’t even wait,” the future Commander in Chief added. “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
Replaying that never fails to gross me out.
Today it makes me hum a Twain song — “Don’t Be Stupid.”
