Microsoft is reportedly working on a new line of low-cost Surface tablets, looking to gain a bigger marketshare in a realm dominated by Apple.
Bloomberg reports that Microsoft could release a new line of tablets starting at around $400 as soon as the second half of this year. According to Bloomberg, the new Surfaces will be lighter, with smaller screens, less battery life and USB-C connectivity.
Microsoft’s Surface division has been on the rise recently, posting 32 percent annual revenue growth in its most recent quarter. New offerings like the Surface Book 2, released late last year, and the newly announced Surface Hub 2 show Microsoft is putting plenty of resources behind its device lineup.
Microsoft’s current tablet offerings target the higher end of the market, with the newest version of the Surface Pro starting at $799 and topping out at $1,599.
Microsoft hasn’t made a big dent in the tablet market, ranking outside the top five companies by shipments and marketshare, according to IDC. Tablet sales have been on the decline for years now, but detachable tablets like Microsoft’s Surface offerings and the iPad Pro actually saw 3 percent annual growth versus a 14 percent drop in sales of traditional slate tablets.
