Bill Cosby’s wife made her first comments since her husband was convicted of sexual assault, saying the trial was “mob justice — not real justice” — and a “tragedy,” and calling for a criminal investigation into the Philadelphia prosecutor who secured the comedian’s conviction.
Camille Cosby issued a statement on Thursday condemning the verdict that convicted her husband on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, crimes that could put the 80-year-old behind bars for the rest of his life, according to The Associated Press .
Camille Cosby paralleled her husband to other black men wrongfully convicted of crimes, and Cosby’s lawyers said they would appeal the conviction.
“Once again, an innocent person has been found guilty based on an unthinking, unquestioning, unconstitutional frenzy propagated by the media and allowed to play out in a supposed court of law,” she said. “This is mob justice, not real justice. This tragedy must be undone not just for Bill Cosby, but for the country.”
She went on to target Andrea Constand — Bill Cosby’s chief accuser and the only one of dozens whose statute of limitations had not run out — saying her testimony was “riddled with innumerable, dishonest contradictions” and accusing her of lying to extort money from her husband.
Meanwhile, Constand’s lawyer rejected the statement and pointed to the results of the trial as evidence of Bill Cosby’s guilt.
“Twelve honorable jurors — peers of Cosby — have spoken,” said lawyer Dolores Troiani. “There is nothing else that needs to be said.”
But Camille Cosby disagreed. She argued that her husband’s conviction was the result of “exploitive and corrupt” politics after Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele advocated for the comedian’s conviction, and she said that Steele and his team’s “primary purpose is to advance themselves professionally and economically at the expense of Mr. Cosby’s life.”
She added that the other women who have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault are like a “lynch mob” prompted by the media’s “frenzied, relentless demonization” of her husband.
“Someday the truth will prevail, it always does,” said Camille Cosby.
But according to Constand, it already has .
