“Mnuchin has completely misread…”
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon called out Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday for botching trade negotiations with China after President Donald Trump “changed the dynamic.”
Speaking to Bloomberg, the former Cambridge Analytica vice president condemned the U. S. attempting to call a truce amid concerns of a brewing trade war with China.
Bannon said Trump “changed the dynamic regarding China, but in one weekend Secretary Mnuchin has given it away.”
On Sunday, Mnuchin said that the U. S. is “putting the trade war on hold,” after both nations announced they would pause tariff threats and instead focus on “substantially” reducing the U. S. merchandise trade deficit with China.
“Right now, we have agreed to put the tariffs on hold while we execute the framework,” the treasury secretary said in a statement.
But Bannon told Bloomberg that Mnuchin’s comments proved he “misses the central point” of economic competition with China.
“They’re in a trade war with us and it hasn’t stopped,” Bannon added. ”Mnuchin has completely misread the geopolitical, military, and historical precedence and what President Trump had done was finally put the Chinese on their back heels.”
On Monday, Trump defended his administration’s trade tactics on Twitter.
“China has agreed to buy massive amounts of ADDITIONAL Farm/Agricultural Products – would be one of the best things to happen to our farmers in many years!” Trump wrote .

Bannon has had an explosive few months since leaving the White House, but has remained reluctant to attack the president directly after a short-lived spat with Trump seemed to cost him a job as executive chairman of Breitbart News.
Bannon made headlines earlier this year after telling writer Michael Wolff that Russia investigators are going to “crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.”
