The high-end smartphone from camera maker RED has been taking longer than expected to hit the market, but now the company has reached a deal with the two U. S. carriers to sell the device this summer.
The RED Hydrogen One is a mysterious device. The initial announcement last year included just one unclear render of the phone along with a lot of buzzwords, mostly relating to its “holographic display”.
Things didn’t get much clearer after that. YouTuber Marques Brownlee published a video later in the year showcasing the design of the phone, but details on the technology surrounding the display still aren’t very clear, even though former CEO of RED, Jim Jannard, has previously attempted to describe it:
Earlier this year, the company announced that the phone would be released in the summer and that it would be sold through carriers, but didn’t specify which ones. It seems that the company has made some progress in that regard, as both Verizon and AT&T have announced that they will be carrying the phone later this summer.
A specific release date is still unknown, as are most of the device’s specs, but we do know that the phone will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (not the more recent 845), a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C connector and pin connectors on the back which will allow for modular components to be attached to the smartphone, much like Lenovo’s Moto Z line. The phone’s “holographic” display will come in at 5.7 inches.
Pre-orders for the device are no longer available, but they were priced at $1,195 for the aluminum version and $1,495 for the titanium version. It’s unclear how pricing will vary for the carrier versions of the phone.
