On Friday, reporters from The New York Times and other news organizations got a glimpse inside the second-largest facility in the country for children detained by the immigration authorities.
The United States has for years housed children who crossed the border without an adult in a network of makeshift shelters and children’s homes across the country.
But the Trump administration’s recent practice of separating migrant children from their parents has brought renewed scrutiny to the facilities that care for the minors until the government finds a more permanent home for them.
As a condition of entering the center in Homestead, Fla., about 40 miles south of Miami, reporters were not allowed to interview the children or staff, or take photos, videos or any other recordings.
