“Not just because of the strong economy…”
Senate candidate Mitt Romney said Thursday that he expects President Donald Trump to have no issue willing reelection in 2020.
“I think President Trump will be re-nominated by my party easily, and I think he’ll be reelected solidly,” Romney said, who’s running for a Utah Senate seat, according to Politico .
The former Republican presidential nominee argued that Trump shouldn’t have a problem winning a second term because of how well the economy has been doing since he took office, while also noting that Democrats are likely to “nominate someone who is really out of the mainstream of American thought.”
“I think that not just because of the strong economy and because people are increasingly seeing rising wages, but I think it’s also true because I think our Democrat friends are likely to nominate someone who is really out of the mainstream of American thought and will make it easier for a president who is presiding over a growing economy,” Romney said.
Romney, once a rather hostile critic of the president, has softened his approach towards addressing the current administration, especially since announcing his Senate run earlier this year.
“I think that his policies have been by and large a good deal better than I might have expected. But some of the things he has said are not ones that I would aspire for my grandkids to adopt,” Romney said in May.
However, the former Massachusetts governor also noted that he still doesn’t consider the president to be a “ role model ” despite agreeing with much of his policy actions since taking office.
“I don’t think that I would point to the president as a role model for my grandkids on the basis of his personal style,” Romney said.
He also recently revealed that instead of voting for Trump or Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, he voted for his wife, Ann Romney.
