A Stranger Things adaptation is also coming later
Netflix and Telltale Games are teaming up to introduce a series of interactive narratives to the streaming service this fall, similar to ones that have already appeared, Netflix told Polygon this afternoon.
Additionally, Telltale is developing an adaptation based on Stranger Things, a Netflix representative told Polygon.
A Telltale representative confirmed to Polygon that it’s developing games for Netflix and that Stranger Things would be a separate project on consoles and PC.
“We’re delighted by the response we’re seeing to the idea of Minecraft: Story Mode coming to Netflix in the fall as an interactive adventure, and separately, we’re thrilled to confirm that Telltale is developing a game based on Stranger Things that we’ll publish to consoles and computers at a later date,” the Telltale rep said. “Our partnership with Netflix is something we’re incredibly proud of, and while we don’t have anything more to share right now, we’re excited to reveal details on these projects later in the year.”
The news was first reported today by TechRadar .
“We can confirm Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to our service this fall,” Netflix tells Polygon. “It’s an extension of our other interactive stories we have on our service like Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile .” Those three shows, catering to younger viewers, premiered on Netflix between March 2017 and this year.
The interactive games are controlled by television remotes’ directional and select buttons. TechRadar reported that a playable demo of Minecraft: Story Mode already exists.
That said, the Netflix representative was careful to say the company doesn’t “have any plans to get into gaming.
“There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment available today,” the spokesperson said. “Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service.”
Minecraft: Story Mode originally had two seasons and the first, launching over 2015 and 2016, was episodes long. That was followed by a five-episode second season over the latter half of 2017. Stranger Things is a completely new project and based on Netflix’s comments it sounds like it will be a fuller experience in the mode of Telltale’s adaptations such as Batman, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
