June 16 (UPI) — A second sheriff’s deputy in the Kansas City, Kan, died after a gunman shot them as they transported inmates to a courthouse, law enforcement officials said.
On Friday, both deputies of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office were transported to the University of Kansas Hospital. Patrick Rohrer, 35, died first and Theresa King died at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office said.
“We continue to pray for our brothers and sister with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Department as we lose our sister this morning. No words could explain the feelings and emotions you feel. Praying for Wyandotte County!!” the Kansas City Kansas Police department wrote on Facebook following King’s passing.
Around 11:30 a.m., the deputies were shot in downtown Kansas City, courthouse and sheriff’s office, near a transport bay while a suspect was being moved from court back to the jail.
Media outlets identified the inmate as Antoine Fielder who reportedly got hold of a deputy’s firearm during the transfer. Fielder was also struck and underwent surgery.
In Fielder’s two trials for murder, they ended in hung juries. He also is facing charges in the first-degree murder of a 55-year-old woman on Dec. 26,2017, in Kansas City, Mo.
Kansas City police spokesman Zac Blair said officers were speaking to witnesses about shooting.
“This is a courthouse building, there is video. We will be looking at that video,” he said.
