President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s accepted mutual invitations to visit each other’s countries, according to North Korean state media.
“Kim Jong Un invited Trump to visit Pyongyang at a convenient time and Trump invited Kim Jong Un to visit the U. S.,” North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency revealed in a report celebrating the end of “the extreme hostile relations between the DPRK and the U. S.”
“The two top leaders gladly accepted each other’s invitation, convinced that it would serve as another important occasion for improved DPRK-U. S. relations,” North Korea stressed in its reporting.
Trump met his North Korean counterpart in Singapore Tuesday for an unprecedented summit. Toward the end of the landmark meeting, the president said he will “absolutely” invite Kim Jong Un to the White House. (RELATED: Trump Says He Will ‘Absolutely’ Invite Kim Jong Un To The White House)
Prior to the start of the summit, which kicked off Tuesday morning with a remarkable handshake between two men who were ready to wage war against one another this time last year, Trump told The Daily Caller that he would “certainly” invite the North Korean leader to the White House if the meeting went well. Both Trump and Kim seem to have positive views of the summit.
“Chairman Kim Jong Un and President Trump expressed expectation and belief that the two countries which have lived in the quagmire of hostility, distrust and hatred would pass the unhappy past over and dynamically advance toward an excellent and proud future beneficial to each other and another new era, the era of the DPRK-U. S. cooperation would open up,” KCNA reported.
The Rodong Sinmun, the most widely-read paper in North Korea called the summit the “meeting of the century,” explaining that this event marked the start of a “new history in U. S.-North Korea relations.”
The summit yielded limited results, but it was a start. More meetings are expected to follow. “We’ll meet many times,” Trump said as the summit was wrapping up.
