Wrong-way driver faces new charges after a June 2 crash victim dies

At first, 28-year-old Nicole Bertoldi was charged with intoxicated assault. But last week, after the victim died of his injuries on June 16, Bertoldi’s charge was upgraded to intoxication manslaughter.
The wrong-way driver who caused a June 2 collision on Interstate 45 in Houston has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a victim in the crash died of his injuries two weeks later.
Nicole Bertoldi, 28, told police she had been drinking when she drove her Toyota Corolla the wrong way early that morning on the southbound side of Interstate 45 in Houston near the Pierce Elevated at West Dallas.
Her Corolla collided head-on with a Kia Optima and was hit by another car on the highway. The Kia’s driver, 67-year-old Billy Allen, was transported to Ben Taub Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
At first, Bertoldi was charged with intoxicated assault. But last week, after Allen died of his injuries on June 16, her charge was upgraded to intoxication manslaughter.
Bertoldi, who lives in The Woodlands, has no criminal history in Harris County or Montgomery County. She is out of jail on a $50,000 bond, although the court demanded that she install an ignition interlock in her vehicle to prevent her from driving while intoxicated.
