We’ve known for a while that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 won’t have a traditional single-player campaign. What it will have is an expanded Zombies game mode, one that developer Treyarch is clearly putting a lot of energy into. Today it released a new trailer for Zombies, and it looks completely over the top.
It all begins with a monologue by a single character, a woman named Scarlett. She’s joined by Bruno, Diego and Shaw to round out the four-player cooperative mode, but judging from this new trailer the story seems to revolve around her. The action starts on the Titanic, and includes a massive gunfight across multiple decks — including the Grand Staircase which featured prominently in the 1997 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
At one point the characters use an elaborate staff-shaped artifact to push back the zombie hordes. The forcefield generated appears to teleport them across time and space. They pop up in a version of ancient Rome, semi-automatic shotguns and assault rifles in hand. The trailer concludes with an all-out battle on the floor of a colosseum against a zombie tiger and all manner of undead abominations.
Other than the substance of the narrative itself, what’s telling about this demo are the lavish melee weapons. There’s a retractable sword, a massive hammer and what looks like a smaller version of the Indian chakram, a thrown weapon popularized by the Xena: Warrior Princess television show.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is expected to release Oct. 12 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
