Alleged leak indicates launch date set for July 13
While there’s still no confirmation that this information is accurate, which means that you should take it with a healthy pinch of salt, a post on reddit reveals that Microsoft has picked July 13 as the launch date of the new Surface model.
Most likely, the company won’t introduce the new device as part of a press event, but only roll out an official announcement on the Surface blog. New accessories like Type Covers will also be launched.
Information posted in the same discussion thread also claims to reveal that specifications of the new Surface model.
Particularly aimed at the education sector, this more affordable Surface would come with a 10-inch display with a resolution of 1800×1200 pixels and be powered by a selection of Intel Pentium chips. The top-of-the-range model will get a Pentium Gold chipset with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. 4GB configurations will also be published, and storage can be reduced to 64GB for entry-level versions.
It’s believed LTE models will also be launched, but there’s a chance they would go on sale at a later time – this is an approach that Microsoft has used for other Surface products as well, including for the Surface Pro.
The new Surface will tip the scales at 562 grams and feature USB-C for recharging plus microSD card support for additional storage.
Pricing will begin at $399 for education customers, while the top-of-the-range configuration will have a price of $829 without accessories. Special keyboards and mice will launch too.
Given that the device will be specifically launched at the education sector, sales should start in the coming weeks, ahead of the back-to-school season.
