Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York accused President Donald Trump on Monday of being jealous of former Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
As Cuomo was briefing reporters about legislation to restore speed camera around New York City schools, he both praised McCain while simultaneously slamming the president.
The New York governor spoke about Trump after a reporter asked his opinion on the president lowering the American flag to half-staff, before raising it up to full-staff less than 48 hours later.
“At this point, we should be surprised by pettiness and nastiness and shameful behavior?” Cuomo asked. “I don’t think so.” (RELATED: ACLU Defends The NRA Against Andrew Cuomo’s ‘Blacklisting Campaign’)
“[Trump] is predictable in his narcissism, his anger and his disdain – and jealousy,” he said. “He’s jealous. He should be jealous. Senator McCain is twice the public elected official this president will ever be.”
Cuomo seemingly stood by his statement, retweeting a clip of his words and reiterating the sentiment.
“Flags are at half-staff on New York State buildings, but not the White House,” Cuomo tweeted. “Why is Pres. Trump showing disrespect to the late Senator? Because Senator McCain was twice the public elected official Donald Trump will ever be.”
