Three teens died after a church van crashed in Johnson County, Missouri, on the morning of Aug. 10.
The driver lost control of the van and it ran off the road, just before 10:30 a.m., according to the Missouri Highway Patrol, via The Kansas City Star .
Hannah L. Foy, 14, Samara J. Bayse, 17, and David T. Martin, 16, all from different cities, died in the accident. None of those who died were wearing seatbelts at the time KSHB reported.
The three teens were ejected from the van when the accident occurred, according to the Polk County coroner. The van was carrying 11 children and two church chaperones.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol three other people were seriously injured and were hospitalized. Seven others were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The tire had blown out and that’s what caused it,” said Melissa Britton, the Polk County coroner. “He [the driver] was keeping it on the road, but the trailer the van was pulling started to fishtail, and the momentum carried them off the road.”
There was a second van following the first one that lost control. The occupants of the second van said when the first van lost control it rolled down an embankment and into a tree.
A pastor at the Faith Chapel Assembly of God said the van occupants were going on a canoe trip. He said the group consisted of 17 kids in 7th through 12th grades, and five adults. The group was planning to return on Aug. 12, KSHB reported.
The van’s driver, 34-year-old youth pastor Bradley Bailey, was released from the hospital, along with six children, by the evening of Aug. 10, according to the hospital spokeswoman, via the Star.
