Facebook and Twitter delete manipulative Russian and Iranian accounts

Social media firms Facebook and Twitter announced new actions it was taken against state-sponsored “inauthentic” accounts. Social media firms Facebook and Twitter announced new actions it was taken against state-sponsored “inauthentic” accounts. These are accounts that were at their core helmed to sow division and/or troll users of the network while pretending to be Facebook
“Today we removed multiple Pages, groups and accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior on Facebook and Instagram. Some of this activity originated in Iran, and some originated in Russia.” Facebook explained “These were distinct campaigns and we have not identified any link or coordination between them. However, they used similar tactics by creating networks of accounts to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing.”
Facebook removed 652 pages, one of whom had 155,000 followers. Said accounts hand spent more than $6,000 in advertising, and Facebook has now launched a review looking at how the content of the ads and blocking some of them.
Twitter for its part announced a similar initiative, suspending close to 300 accounts in a purge disclosed this morning.
Social media firms have taken a hit over the last couple of months from the media and US government bodies who have all but accused them of a dereliction of duty. The firms have taken extra steps like the above to not be caught flat-footed in the lead up to another election season.
