Actor Kevin Spacey’s first film since becoming the target of sexual misconduct allegations opened to $126 Friday and $162 Saturday.
Only eight theaters in the U. S. carried “Billionaire Boys Club” on its opening weekend and, when accounting for the average ticket price in U. S. theaters, a little fewer than 50 people actually saw the film, reported Fox News. Spacey plays a con man and investor in the film, which narrates how a 1980s money-making scheme turned on its inventors.
The Aug. 17-19 weekend’s top-grossing box office films were “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Meg” and “Mile 22,” which raked in $25.2 million, $21.2 million and $13.6 million, respectively.
“We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small, supporting role in ‘Billionaire Boys Club’ — does not tarnish the release of the film,” Vertical Entertainment said, according to a June statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film.”
“Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of trying to seduce him when Spacey was 26 years old and Rapp was 14 years old. Spacey, now 59 years old, was subsequently dropped from Netflix series “House of Cards” and “All the Money in the World,” a film which opened to the tune of $2.6 million in December 2017.
“I’m beyond horrified to hear this story. I honestly do not remember the encounter,” Spacey said, regarding Rapp’s allegation. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior… I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.” (RELATED: Three More Kevin Spacey Accusers Come Forward)
The actor has since been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple other men.
