Vice President Mike Pence addressed the Pentagon Thursday to shed light on President Donald Trump’s declaration that the U. S. will create a sixth branch of the military known as Space Force.

Pence noted that the Trump administration will ask Congress to appropriate an extra $8 billion in spending to create the Space Force which is expected to draw on existing resources from U. S. Air Force Space Command. “Today we renew the president’s call on the Congress of the United States to invest in additional $8 billion in our space security systems over the next five years,” Pence said.
The Vice President continued that “to be clear the space force will not be built from scratch. The men and women who run and protect our nation’s space programs today are already the best in the world.” Pence went on to justify the first new branch of the U. S. military in nearly 70 years by saying that the United States needs to remain competitive in the space environment.
“When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space. So important,” Trump said in a recent speech announcing the Space Force.
The president expressed his anticipation for the plan in a Thursday tweet saying, “Space Force all the way!”
