Franklin died Thursday, Aug. 16, at her Detroit home. She was 76.
DETROIT, MI – As the world mourns Aretha Franklin, Michigan’s very own Queen of Soul who died Thursday at her Detroit home, we’re remembering her amazing musical career that spanned gospel, R&B, pop and even opera.
But even more than those diverse genres, Franklin’s music – sung with her deep, spiritual voice – spanned generations.
Her publicist told The Associated Press that Franklin, 76, died at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit. She had pancreatic cancer.
Her music climbed the iTunes charts on Thursday, including her signature “Respect,” originally an Otis Redding tune that she blazed up the charts with in 1967, flipping his original male-centered script and making it an anthem for the feminist and civil rights movements, according to the AP.
Scores of musicians, celebrities and world leaders publicly mourned her death on Thursday, including former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, who posted this on his Facebook page:
“For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience.
“In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.”
The Associated Press has released more than two dozen photographs that showcase Franklin’s impressive career.
We’ve sharing them with you here. Rest in peace, our wonderful diva queen.
