President Trump promised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he’d sign a declaration to officially end the Korean War during their June summit in Singapore, according to a new report.
He told the dictator he’d ink the agreement shortly after the June 12 meeting, but has since insisted the Hermit Kingdom denuclearize first — and the move could explain why talks have stalled between the two countries, according to Vox .
“It makes sense why the North Koreans are angry,” one source told the online news outlet.
“Having Trump promise a peace declaration and then moving the goalposts and making it conditional would be seen as the US reneging on its commitments.”
Pyongyang believes Trump made the same promise to Kim Yong Chol, a top top aide to Kim, at the White House on June 1, according to Vox, which is citing “sources familiar with the negotiations.”
Trump and Kim signed a vague agreement at the summit committing to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula — but Kim believed the peace declaration would come first, and that he needs the deal to save face before he can start to dismantle the arsenal, the site reports.
