WASHINGTON, U. S. – A day after making efforts to downplay the bombshell revelation that his White House counsel has been cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the U. S. President Donald Trump launched an outburst on Twitter on Sunday.
On Saturday, a report in the New York Times revealed that the White House counsel Donald McGahn has been cooperating with Mueller in his Russia collusion probe.
The report revealed that McGahn has not only cooperated with Mueller over his probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, but has also discussed accounts of multiple episodes at the center of Mueller’s probe into whether Trump obstructed justice.
After the report appeared, Trump tried to downplay the report, by tweeting, “I allowed White House Counsel Don McGahn, and all other requested members of the White House Staff, to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel. In addition we readily gave over one million pages of documents. Most transparent in history. No Collusion, No Obstruction. Witch Hunt!”
However, the report revealed something integral – that McGahn has had three voluntary interviews with Mueller’s team totaling 30 hours.
More importantly, it noted that one of the episodes McGahn discussed with investigators was Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey last year.
The other one was the president’s repeated urging of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to claim oversight of the special counsel despite his recusal from Russia probes.
To a large extent, both these issues form the crux of Mueller’s probe into possible obstruction of justice by the President.
On Sunday, denouncing Mueller’s probe as a “rigged and disgusting witch hunt,” Trump stepped up his attack on the federal probe.
Trump also denounced the probe as “McCarthyism at its WORST!,” and continued to insist that he had authorized his White House counsel to testify to bring the matter to a close.
In a series of angry morning tweets, Trump slammed the “Failing New York Times” for implying that McGahn had turned on him.
In a two-part tweet, Trump wrote, “The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel, he must be a John Dean type “RAT.” But I allowed him and all others to testify – I didn’t have to. I have nothing to hide….and have demanded transparency so that this Rigged and Disgusting Witch Hunt can come to a close. So many lives have been ruined over nothing – McCarthyism at its WORST! Yet Mueller & his gang of Dems refuse to look at the real crimes on the other side – Media is even worse!”
A short while later, he wrote, “No Collusion and No Obstruction, except by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats. All of the resignations and corruption, yet heavily conflicted Bob Mueller refuses to even look in that direction. What about the Brennan, Comey, McCabe, Strzok lies to Congress, or Crooked’s Emails!”
About 36 minutes later, Trump again took to Twitter to thrash the New York Times for running the story.
This time, Trump wrote, “The Failing New York Times wrote a story that made it seem like the White House Councel had TURNED on the President, when in fact it is just the opposite – & the two Fake reporters knew this. This is why the Fake News Media has become the Enemy of the People. So bad for America!”
However, that was not going to be the last time in the day that Trump lambasts the newspaper.
Eight minutes later, he again tweeted, this time claiming, “Some members of the media are very Angry at the Fake Story in the New York Times. They actually called to complain and apologize – a big step forward. From the day I announced, the Times has been Fake News, and with their disgusting new Board Member, it will only get worse!”
Ten minutes later, he returned to his favourite subject – the ‘witch hunt.’
Trump wrote, “Study the late Joseph McCarthy, because we are now in period with Mueller and his gang that make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby! Rigged Witch Hunt!”
Meanwhile, in an appearance on NBC, Trump’s top attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said that Trump didn’t raise executive privilege or lawyer-client privilege during those interviews because his team believed that fully participating would be the fastest way to bring the investigation to a close.
Giuliani said, “The president encouraged him to testify, is happy that he did, is quite secure that there is nothing in the testimony that will hurt the president.”
