NYON, Switzerland — Germany was picked as the host of the 2024 European soccer championship on Thursday, beating Turkey in a vote by officials from UEFA, European soccer’s governing body.
UEFA’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, announced the winner after a campaign that saw politics and concerns about human rights in Turkey play a central role. Germany, a campaign favorite with a proven track record of hosting major events, had hoped winning the rights would help it move on from months of public disputes and criticism surrounding its disappointing early exit from this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
Turkey is now a four-time losing candidate; it also mounted failed bids to host Euro 2008,2012 and 2016.
UEFA relies on the competition to help finance its 55 member federations. Revenue from the 24-team Euro 2016 in France was almost 2 billion euros ($2.35 billion). UEFA reported a profit of 850 million euros ($1 billion).
Germany will offer UEFA about 400,000 more seats to sell than the French organizers did in 2016. It plans to use 10 stadiums for the 51-game tournament, and to play the final in Berlin or Munich.
Earlier Thursday, UEFA’s executive committee announced that it would introduce the use of video assistant referees in its marquee club competition, the Champions League, starting next season. UEFA also said that it plans to use V. A. R.s at Euro 2020, as well as its second-tier club championship, the Europa League.
The V. A. R. system will be used in the final qualifying round, the group stage and the knockout stages of next season’s Champions League.
“We are confident that introducing V. A. R.s in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of V. A. R. in the Champions League,” Ceferin said.
