Microsoft might face a class action lawsuit as the court has agreed to reopen an old gender discrimination lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit was first filed back in 2015 by three former Microsoft employees Katherine Moussouris, Holly Muenchow and Dana Piermarini.
The lawsuit also reveals that there were 238 reports of gender discrimination filed between 2010 and 2016 within the company. The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft’s “company-wide policies and practices systematically violate female technical employees’ rights and result in the unchecked gender bias that pervades its corporate culture.”
The case was ruled in favour of Microsoft by a district court on June 25 but has now moved to the Ninth Circuit. If the court decides to overturn the district court’s decision and grants, class certification, then Microsoft will have to potentially pay hefty financial penalties, should it lose at trial. The plaintiffs have now made a class action case of over 8,600 women in various Microsoft offices across the US who are seeking damages from the Redmond giant.
Microsoft has until January 31,2019, to file an opposition. The company didn’t comment immediately on the matter.
