Tafahree Maynard, 18, should be considered armed and dangerous after taking the life of Gwinnett County Police Officer Antwan Toney, authorities say.
Two teen suspects, including one who remains at large, have been charged in connection with Saturday’s fatal shooting of a Georgia police officer.
Tafahree Maynard, 18, should be considered armed and dangerous after taking the life of Gwinnett County Police Officer Antwan Toney, authorities say. Isaiah Pretlow, who cops say drove their vehicle from the scene, has been charged with aggravated assault related to an incident after the shooting. The 19-year-old Pretlow is in custody.
Maynard has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the police at (770) 513-5710.
Toney was killed while responding to a suspicious vehicle parked near a middle school in Snellville with another officer.
“Before they could even get to the vehicle, shots rang out,” Gwinnett County Sgt. Jake Smith said, according to WSB.
The 30-year-old Toney, who was from Southern California and had been with the department for nearly three years, passed away at a nearby hospital.
“The people that worked with Officer Toney on a daily basis recalled a very jovial person who was dedicated to his job and dedicated to his community,” Gwinnett County Police Chief Butch Ayers said.
Investigators say Pretlow drove the vehicle from the scene and crashed a short distance away. An officer encountered Pretlow about 3 p.m. and fired at him after the suspect pointed his gun. Pretlow fled into a wooded area and was taken into custody by U. S. Marshals about 11:30 p.m.
Cops believe there may have been as many as four people inside the vehicle.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office posted a tribute to Officer Toney on its Facebook page on Saturday.
“This man died today because he was committed to making our community a safer place,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “For us. He died for us. We owe him a debt that we can never repay.”
Toney was the first officer killed in the line of duty in Gwinnett County since 1993, according to CNN. Three police officers were massacred in April of 1964.
