WASHINGTON — U. S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat who won a traditionally Republican district last year, is getting an earful from constituents on both sides of the political divide about the federal shutdown and what should be done.
Her suggestion: Reopen government as soon as possible and then have immediate discussions between both parties and the White House over security concerns along the southern border.
“I have a very politically diverse district,” said Slotkin, D-Holly, a former CIA agent and acting assistant defense secretary who defeated former U. S. Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, in November. “I get lots of calls saying build the wall (and) I get lots of calls saying don’t you dare build that wall.… And I get a lot of in-between.”
Slotkin has been in the middle of talks among freshman members of the U. S. House, which is now under majority control of Democrats. On Tuesday, she hosted talks in her office in Washington among some new members of Congress — including several, like her, from districts President Donald Trump won in 2016 — about how to get talks underway that could resolve the shutdown, which is the longest in U.
