The US Supreme Court on Friday said it will decide whether the Trump administration can add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
The justices have agreed to a speedy review of a lower court ruling that has blocked the administration from adding the question — which could affect the allocation of seats in the House and the distribution of billions in federal funds — for the first time since 1950.
On Jan. 15, US District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan ruled that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had concealed the true motives for his “arbitrary and capricious” decision to add the citizenship question in violation of federal law.
Oral arguments in the case will take place in late April, with a ruling expected by the end of June.
Eighteen states, 15 cities and several immigrant rights groups sued the government over its decision to ask about citizenship on the 2020 census form that goes to households every 10 years.
