I. M. Pei, the architect revered around the world for iconic modernist structures including a section of the Des Moines Art Center, has died. He was 102.
Pei, born in China and educated at Harvard, was the creator behind structures like the glass pyramid at The Louvre in Paris, the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington and John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, among many well-known buildings in various corners of the world.
He died early Thursday, his son, architect Li Chung Pei, confirmed to the New York Times.
A spacious section of the Des Moines Art Center, made mostly of concrete, was designed by Pei in 1965 and opened in 1968. The addition expanded the Art Center, which was originally designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1948.
