White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said on Sunday that the U. S. is in a “new phase” of the pandemic, urging people to follow public health guidance as cases continue to climb in many parts of the country. “What we’re seeing today is different from March and April,” Birx said on CNN’s State of the Union. “It is extraordinarily widespread, it’s into the rural as equal urban areas.” The U. S. has surpassed more than 4.6 million confirmed cases of the virus and 154,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Cases have skyrocketed in many Southern and Western states in recent months, and members of the White House coronavirus task force are warning of emerging hot spots in the Midwest. The latest national ensemble forecast, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, predicts the U. S. could record as many as 182,000 total deaths by Aug.22, just three weeks away. Birx told CNN that projections for a death toll by the year’s end depend on how states accelerate and maintain their mitigation efforts, particularly in the South and West. “Public health is called public health because it has a public component, and we need all of the public to help us get in control of this virus,” she said, urging Americans to wear masks in public, practice social distancing and avoid crowded gatherings. Birx emphasized that unlike the series of outbreaks in metro areas earlier this year, the virus is prevalent in both urban and rural areas. She said people in rural communities are “not immune or protected” from it.
