U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer urged against major structural reforms to the court like adding justices, arguing in a speech Tuesday that it’s not operating in the partisan fashion liberals fear, with President Joe Biden reportedly assembling a commission dedicated to studying the issue. The Supreme Court relies on “a trust that the court is guided by legal principle, not politics,” Breyer said in his remarks, as reported by the Washington Post. “Structural alteration motivated by the perception of political influence can only feed that perception, further eroding that trust.” Breyer could spur the next major change to the Supreme Court, as the 82-year-old justice is being widely pressured to retire while Democrats control both the White House and Senate.
