The concept of ‘killer robots’ evoluated from the pages of science fiction to reality. Officials in San Francisco have voted 8 – 3 to give the city’s police the power to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in some emergency situations. Among all of San Francisco’s supervisors, only Shamann Walton, Dean Preston and Hillary Ronen voted “no” on approving the policy. A four hours heated debate was necessary. The potential for misuse and abuse of this military-grade technology was considered. The measure still requires a second vote next week and the mayor’s approval.
