Sean Astin, who plays Bob Newby on Season 2 of “ Stranger Things,” knows a thing or two about being a child actor — having starred in his first feature film “The Goonies” at 14 years old.
“In my opinion, as a child actor, if there’s anyone to look up to it is Sean,” Gaten Matarazzo, 15, said during a town hall for SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio, which airs Thursday. “He’s been able to keep his career up, he’s a good person, he’s such a great guy, he’s been successful, he’s never really had a low point… and he’s so humble.”
Matarazzo, who plays Dustin on the hit Netflix show, added that Astin’s biggest piece of advice for all the teens in the cast was to stay in school.
Caleb McLaughlin was also star-struck working with Astin.
“When you’re filming it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, he’s here,’ but now it’s like, ‘Oh my god, I was working with Sean Astin!’
“It’s a great experience and he’s a part of it,” the 16-year-old actor said. “That’s how you know the show is huge because someone like him joins the show and is very happy to join.”
Talking to Newsweek, Astin said of working with the teens, “The experience they are having is so familiar to me, having done been on a set so young. And we bonded. One of my favorite scenes to film was in the hospital. Finn [Wolfhard], Winona [Ryder] and I were standing by the bed watching Noah [Schnapp] flip out while nurses try to put a needle in him. Suddenly I was just absolutely in that moment. That young performer is doing such amazing work, he’s incredible, and it’s great to see that.”
