MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — Hours before his Saturday night set at Soaring Eagle Casino, comedian Bill Maher received widespread backlash for using a racial slur in a joke on his show the night prior.
During an interview with Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse on Maher’s show „Real Time, “ the Republican politician invited Maher to the state, saying, „We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.“
Maher replied, „Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house (expletive) .“
Many, including Maher’s network, HBO, have condemned what the comedian told his audience was a joke.
He has since apologized.
„Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show, “ Maher said in a statement, according to the New York Times .
„Last night was a particularly long night as a I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.“
Maher is slated for an 8 p.m. set Saturday, June 3, at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort.
As of late afternoon, the show is expected to go on as planned. A casino spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
