New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was booed by New York Mets fans Tuesday at Citi Field after he caught a foul ball.
July 19 (UPI) — New York Mets fans booed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at Citi Field after he caught a foul ball.
Christie was sitting in the stands of the Mets‘ 5-0 loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals when a baseball flew toward his section in the top of the third inning. Cardinals infielder Paul DeJong sliced the Rafael Montero offering to the right side of the field, near home plate. Christie reached out with his left arm and snared the baseball for the catch, without even standing up, from his seat in the third row.
He shook hands with several fans around him, but an echo of boos could be heard on the broadcast after he made the play. Christie gave the ball away to a kid sitting near him, according to WOR 710 NewsTalk Radio.
Christie also autographed the baseball.
After Christie made the grab, Fox Sports‘ Dan McLaughlin said: „Nice to see him get from the beach here to the ballpark.“
The shot was a reference to Christie being photographed at the beach in early July after closing beaches to the public due to a New Jersey government shutdown related to the budget.
The Mets (41-50) trailed 4-0 at the point of Christie’s catch. DeJong fouled out during the at-bat.
Christie recently made his sports talk radio debut on WFAN, where he discussed the Mets‘ struggles and was insulted by fans.
New York has now lost three consecutive games. The Cardinals and Mets resume their four-game series at 7: 08 p.m. Wednesday at Citi Field.
Christie’s son Andrew Christie, played baseball for Princeton University. The catcher hit.227 in three seasons for the Tigers.
