Regardless of how you feel about President Donald Trump’s preference to a new ban on transgender soldiers you should be concerned about the manner in which he announced it. The Department of Defense press contacts were referring questions to the White House because they had no idea that the change in policy was coming. Even members of the President’s own administration were surprised by this. The whole thing appears to be just another one of the Trump’s spur-of-the-moment whims. Meanwhile, thousands of transgender soldiers proudly serving our nation found out on Twitter that their Commander-in-Chief does not have their back.

Trump’s real agenda
President Trump’s real agenda is now clear to everyone: Undo as much of President Barack Obama’s initiatives as possible and, while doing so, insult and demean Obama and his reasons for them.
He wants to get rid of the Iran nuclear arms deal, the climate change pact with all nations but two, the Affordable Care Act, allowing LGBT persons in the military, sanctuary cities, undo all acts against Wall Street trading that caused the Great Recession and anything else President Obama had caused. So is all this being done to “Make Russia Great Again”?

Free Press has wrong priorities
The Free Press was the spokesperson for working people in the distant past. But now it is obvious that it has forgotten those who built, maintained and protected metro Detroit. The views and needs of autoworkers, police, steel workers and small business owners seem to be disregarded. The Free Press real estate section always shows houses that are priced for the rich. Negative articles are written about the police but the perpetrators of much of the crime, i.e. the illegal drug industry, often go unreported. Why can’ t you report on people or groups who are actually fixing up or restoring their homes, businesses, or churches? Why aren’ t you describing the good that our first responders are doing?

Don’ t call it a rebellion
Attempting to sum up the events of 1967 in Detroit with a single word is somewhat of an exercise in futility. What started as an uprising/rebellion quickly degenerated into a riot. I object to the use of descriptions other than riot because they imply justification for the wanton destruction. The racist authorities must answer for their provocation, but the rioters are no less responsible for their crimes.
You are likely to stumble trying to move forward while looking backward. It’s time to start asking why attempts to revive Detroit have been so ineffective and what we can do about it.

Kudos are in order for Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski who remained true to their principles despite the promises of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. These senators stood their ground despite the threats and bullying used to sway them. It is gratifying to find senators who value loyalty to their constituents over their personal ambitions.
