Sony isn’t allowing PlayStation 4 owners to cross-play Ark: Survival Evolved with those on the Xbox One. The move is similar to its stance regarding cross-play in Minecraft and Rocket League.
Ark: Survival Evolved is an action-adventure survival game featuring dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures that has been in early access on the PC, PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One for the past couple of years. Promising both single-player and multiplayer content, the title is slated for a full release on August 29,2017.
However, it appears that Sony isn’t allowing PlayStation 4 owners to cross-play with Xbox One gamers.
Jeremy Stieglitz, co-founder of development studio behind ARK, and lead designer, programmer, and co-creative director of the title has stated that:
While the developer’s words still leave the door open for a change in Sony’s stance in the near future, the announcement isn’t entirely surprising, seeing that Sony has been adamant about refusing cross-platform play with Xbox One gamers in other games too. Previously, the company rejected Microsoft’s offer for cross-play in Minecraft and Rocket League as well, claiming that it has to be „mindful“ of its responsibility to its install base.
The insinuation that Microsoft’s Xbox Live somehow isn’t suitable for younger players received a lot of backlash from supporters of the platform as well as Xbox head Phil Spencer .
While it remains to be seen whether Sony’s PlayStation 4 multiplayer strategy is „for the players“ or for the sake of protecting its own business, the latter seems more likely given the company’s resolute stance on the matter of cross-play with the Xbox One.
