Here’s where you’ll find the latest Fortnite news (including Battle Royale), from release date to platforms & pricing to the details of the latest Fortnite update.
Fortnite is a co-op open world survival game developed and published by Epic Games in which you and your friends scavenge to upgrade your fort and protect yourselves from the incoming zombie apocalypse. It’s a paid-for game in Early Access, but will be free-to-play at launch. There’s also Fortnite Battle Royale, a hugely popular free alternative to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Sound good? Great.
It’s a lot to take in, we admit, so here we aim to make it a bit easier: here’s where you’ll find the latest Fortnite news, from release date to platforms & pricing to the details of the latest Fortnite updates.

While many may assume that Fortnite has already been released, that’s technically not true – not in its final form, anyway. What gamers are playing at the moment is an Early Access game, a game that the developers are still actively working on. This means that there might be bugs and other issues with gameplay at the moment, but these should be ironed out before release. It’s available to download on not only PC but Xbox One, PS4 and Mac too.
Fortnite is pegged for official release in 2018, although Epic Games isn’t being any more specific as to when in 2018 we should expect it. It’s for good reason too – while you have to pay to access the game in early access, it’s actually designed as a free-to-play game, and it will be upon release. So you have a choice: wait until 2018 for release, buy a pack (which we come to next) or simply play Fortnite Battle Royale instead.
If you do want to pay to access the full Fortnite game right now, you can pick up the Standard (£34.99), Deluxe (£49.99), Super Deluxe (£74.99) or Limited Edition (£119.99) of Fortnite right now from the Epic Games website .
So, if Fortnite is an open-world co-op zombie shooter, what is Fornite Battle Royale? It’s a similar concept to Bluehole’s hugely popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, where 100 players go head-to-head in an open world map. You begin with no weapons, armour or other essentials, and have to scavenge to build up an arsenal of weapons to take out those you come across until there is only one person left.
It’s arguably more game-y than the hardcore nature PUBG, but we find it to be more accommodating for new players, and a great game overall.
It’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode offers something that PUBG doesn’t – building capabilities. This adds an entirely new dynamic to Fortnite Battle Royale, as you can build makeshift shelters, block doors and generally make it difficult for your enemies to reach you.
The best part? While you have to pay to access the main Fortnite game, anyone can access Fortnite Battle Royale right now, free of charge. You can download it on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac – just make an account and you’ll be online in no time.

So, what’s new in Fortnite and Fortnite Battle Royale? The Fortnite team pushed the latest update to the game, v.2.2.0, on 18 January 2018. But what does it entail?
The main highlight of the update is the introduction of a redesigned Battle Royale map. Up until now, the map has been bright green and fairly empty on the western half of the island. Epic fixed that with the introduction of more realistic map colouring and five new locations on the western half, including the biggest town in the game yet: Tilted Towers.
Tilted Towers is the first location on the map that the devs have referred to as a city, and features a similar geographical footprint to other areas, but with buildings that can be 6 or 7 stories tall – and it includes an underground system too. As well as Tilted Towers, gamers can expect to find these locations in-game:
You can see the changes to the map in the below comparison – simply drag your cursor left and right to examine changes.
Along with the changes to the Battle Royale map, those that play the campaign will no longer be able to shoot team mates – that’s right, friendly fire has been disabled. There’s a bunch of other bug fixes and tweaks across both game modes, but it’s far too much to mention here. If you’re interested, you can head to the Epic Games website for the full v2.2.0 patch notes.
