Asus has confirmed it is working on gaming phone that it may launch by the end of this year
After Razer phone and Xiaomi’s Black Shark, another gaming smartphone is expected to arrive soon. Taiwanese PC maker Asus has confirmed that it is working on a gaming phone that may debut sometime this year.
ASUS Global CEO Jerry Shen confirmed to Astig.ph in an interview that the phone can be „expected“ to launch in the coming days. Though the company has not given any name to the phone yet, nor is there any timeline to its launch. Rumours of the phone has been doing the rounds since long, some expected the phone to appear at MWC 2018, which obviously it didn’t. But this confirms a gaming phone is in works.
Asus already sells gaming laptops and PCs under its ROG (Republic of Gamers) and Strix brand name and the gaming phone will also probably get as similar branding. It will be the company’s very first gaming phone — a handheld portable ROG gaming device — but given the company’s experience in gaming industry, its phone may give a tough competition to the other two.
Gaming smartphones are yet to make a mark in the Android space where most mid-segment phones are capable enough to support almost all of the high-end games available on Play Store. But there are specific modifications that allow them to perform consistently for a longer duration.
Xiaomi’s Black Shark, for example, phone comes with a liquid cooling mechanism that would help keep temperature down while intensive gaming. The company claims it can bring down CPU’s core temperature by up to 8-degrees.
A higher refresh rate on display, better grip, dual speakers, bigger battery, dedicated keys to activate performance mode and support for gaming peripherals are a few things smartphone companies or rather gaming smartphone makers are experimenting with. Not to mention, a low price tag certainly helps. The Black Shark gaming phone retails for about 2999 yuan (roughly Rs 31,000) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage version. With Snapdragon 845 inside, gamers wouldn’t think twice.
For now, Asus is expected to announce its Zenfone 5 and 5Z soon in the global market. The Zenfone 5Z comes with Snapdragon 845 with 6GB RAM under the hood and makes for a great gaming phone itself. The Asus gaming phone could be a step ahead and may turn out to be a head-turner.
