Nearly a dozen lawmakers signed a letter Wednesday urging the U. S. Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation into several high-profile members of former President Barack Obama’s administration.
Eleven members of Congress signed the request for a probe into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and former U. S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
The memo was sent to U. S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and U. S. Attorney John Huber.
The letter, released by Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), stated the following:
In doing so, we are especially mindful of the dissimilar degrees of zealousness that has marked the investigations into Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, respectively.
Because we believe those in positions of high authority should be treated the same as every other American, we want to be sure that the potential violations of law outlined below are vetted appropriately.
The lawmakers believe Comey, who is traveling around promoting his new book, “A Higher Loyalty,” mishandled the FBI’s criminal investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure at the U. S. Department of State. They believe the investigation was tainted because it was “motivated by a political agenda.”
News of the congressional letter came during Comey’s appearance Wednesday on “The View.” He told the show’s co-hosts he had not read the memo and wasn’t sure what to think of it.
“It seems they’ve been saying that stuff since the Clinton email investigation,” Comey said. “A whole lot of that is already being looked at… and I don’t have any other reaction.”
The GOP lawmakers are also calling for an investigation into former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as well as bureau officials Lisa Page and Peter Stzrok.
