Sweltering heat continues to shroud most of Japan. Temperatures reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius in some places on Sunday.
The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system brought blistering sunshine to western and eastern Japan. Gujo City in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, had a daytime high of 39.8 degrees. This temperature has now been recorded twice in the city since recordkeeping began in 1978. Daytime temperatures reached 39.5 degrees in Nagoya, 38.8 in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, 38.6 in Isezaki, Gunma Prefecture, and 38.2 in Tottori City.
