Cops believe Jayme Closs — the Wisconsin teen who disappeared this week after her parents were shot dead inside their home — was still at the residence when the murders occurred.
Authorities said they determined this by analyzing evidence at the scene and the 911 call that was placed early Monday morning, when James and Denise Closs were found dead and Jayme was reported missing.
“Based on our investigation thus far, we believe Jamie was in the home at the time of the homicides and we believe she is still in danger,” said Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald during a Wednesday afternoon press conference .
“Her parents died from gunshot wounds, that’s why we’re ruling this a homicide,” Fitzgerald explained. “There was no gun found on the scene and we believe Jamie was home based on the evidence in our case — some of it from that 911 call.”
Barron County cops have received over 400 tips about the case, but nothing to make them think that Jayme could be a suspect, according to Fitzgerald.
“We want to bring Jayme home. That’s the main point,” he said.
While there have been reports of forced entry, Fitzgerald could not confirm whether the locks on the front door of the Closs home were blown out by gunfire.
“That’s part of the investigation,” Fitzgerald said.
Asked whether authorities thought the murders were random or part of a targeted attack, Fitzgerald said: “No, I wish I was closer to that question… I don’t know that answer.”
Members of the Jayme’s search party have been using drones and infrared to search Barron County and other surrounding areas, but there’s been no sign of her.
“We have searched the immediate area around the home several times,” Fitzgerald said. “But there’s been no other search of any area because we haven’t had any confirmed sightings.”
