‘Diana’ Musical To Debut On Netflix Before Broadway As Theater Industry Grapples With Coronavirus

The Princess Diana musical was originally slated to open on Broadway in March.
Following the success of Hamilton on Disney+, the new Broadway musical Diana will now premiere on Netflix next year before opening on Broadway, as the theater industry contends with how to adapt live productions to a pandemic that’s kept theaters shuttered since March. “Much of the work that Equity staff is currently doing involves collaborating with producers on health and safety protocols,” Mary McColl, Executive Director of Actors’ Equity Association, said in a statement about approving a safety plan for its members participating in Diana’s Netflix broadcast. “Now comes the hard part—taking a safety plan from the page and putting it into practice. The work to provide the safest workplace possible in this environment will require everyone to work together, from the employer to every employee.” Theater has been among the hardest-hit industries by the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving thousands of performers, directors, designers, crew members, administrators and more out of work while Broadway loses an estimated $25 million to $40 million weekly in ticket revenue.
